Story #37: The Architect Behind the Neighborhood: Charles W. Rosenberry
If you’ve ever admired the charm and character of homes in the Country Club District, chances are you’ve already noticed the work of one man—even if you didn’t know his name.
Architect Charles W. Rosenberry was one of the most prolific designers shaping the neighborhood in its earliest years. Working from the late 1920s through the mid-1930s, Rosenberry designed more than 50 homes in the Country Club and nearby Happy Hollow districts—more than any other architect working in the area.
At a time when many homes were built from standard plans by developers, Rosenberry stood out. Builders often started with his “basic” designs, then customized them—but his signature touches remained. Look closely and you’ll start to spot them:
Distinctive Tudor-style details, including half-timbering on upper levels
Thoughtful craftsmanship and balanced proportions
And a telltale feature—his elongated garages, a subtle hallmark of his work
Rosenberry’s influence helped define the architectural character of the neighborhood. Alongside architects like Frederick Henninger and others working in both Country Club and Happy Hollow, he helped create the variety in styles that developer Theodore Metcalfe proudly promoted as “the talk of the town.”
In 1928, Rosenberry took his work a step further, forming the Charles W. Rosenberry Company to design and build homes.
Born in Ainsworth, Nebraska, in 1893, Rosenberry’s career was cut short when he died in 1939 at just 47 years old. But in that short time, he left a lasting imprint—one still visible block by block.
Next time you’re walking the neighborhood, take a closer look. You just might spot a Rosenberry!
